Communications and Networking in Education : Learning in a Networked Society

Description

In most schools the dominant supporting technology has been either the stand-alone personal computer or a modest local network. The situation is changing rapidly as a rising number of schools provide access to the Internet for their staff and pupils, opening avenues for communication and networking hitherto not possible. This book reflects on this change. It aims to further the vision of how these new technologies could improve and transform aspects of education. Yet in parallel it asks serious questions about the realities of an interface between the social, cultural and pedagogical contexts of education and the actual affordances that these new information and communication technologies offer. The chapters in this book provide a heady mix of foresight and practical reporting, of planning for the future but at the same time respecting the problems education already has with current technologies. The richness of the points presented here stems in part from the range of experience of the international authors - from academics and administrators, to teachers and curriculum designers. This mix ensures that the central questions on communications and networking in education are considered not simply from a variety of personal perspectives, but also from different cultural and environmental experiences. And yet interest also lies in the commonality of reporting and discussion based on activity in the field. All the contributions draw heavily on research and experience in devising and running projects and experimental activities in a range of schools and teacher-training institutions and environments. The opinions expressed are thus grounded in knowledge gained from work embedded in the reality of today's educational settings. This must be the only sound base upon which to consider the issues of the future. This book is essential reading for all professionals involved in all aspects of information and communication technologies in education. Teachers, lecturers, researchers, students and administrators will find it invaluable.

Arnold Tompkins: The Philosophy of Teaching

The Philosophy of Teaching

Description

From the Introduction. THE term "philosophy of teaching" places the accent on the process of teaching, while the term "philosophy of education" emphasizes the system of principles as such. The philosophy of education will not be attempted; the theme being restricted to the application of philosophic principles to the teaching process. Not that the application of principles is a more worthy object of attention than the system of principles themselves, but because I feel moved to show how helpful in practice, daily and hourly, are the universal principles which philosophy announces. I have no sympathy with the sneer at mere theorists - those who seek principles for their own sake. What should we do without the light they throw upon our pathway! The practical teacher is not always conscious of, and thankful for, the great service rendered by the speculative philosopher. Universal truth seems so remote from the immediate, concrete details of school work that we do not suspect its presence and controlling power. Hegel well protests against the thought that philosophy deals with another world; asserting its subject to be the concrete and ever present facts of life. The practical teacher must sooner or later learn that inspiration and guidance through the daily routine of duty must be sought in universal truth; that specific rules and recipes, which seem to be so helpful because of their easy and immediate application, are really impractical and confusing because they have no germinant power and breadth of application; that his bearings must be taken from the fixed stars, and not from the shifting scenes and lights of the lower atmosphere. The application of universal principles to teaching presupposes a philosophy of education; and the existence of such a philosophy is not always admitted. Even that there is a science of education has been denied; and for stronger reasons may its philosophy be questioned, it being a higher generalization of principles. A distinguished writer, in the Educational Review, discusses at length the question, "Is there a science of education?" and concludes in these words: "To sum all up in a word, teaching is an art. Therefore there is indeed no science of education..."..

The recent 10,000 year history of climatic stability on Earth that enabled the rise of agriculture and domestication, the growth of cities, numerous technological revolutions, and the emergence of modernity is now over. We accept that in the latest phase of this era, modernity is unmaking the stability that enabled its emergence. But we are deeply worried that current responses to this challeng are focused on market-driven solutions and thus have the potential to further endanger our collective commons. Today public debate is polarized. On one hand we are confronted with the immobilizing effects of knowing "the facts" about climate change. On the other we see a powerful will to ignorance and the effects of a pernicious collaboration between climate change skeptics and industry stakeholders. Clearly, to us, the current crisis calls for new ways of thinking and producing knowledge. Our collective inclination has been to go on in an experimental and exploratory mode, in which we refuse to foreclose on options or jump too quickly to "solutions." In this spirit we feel the need to acknowledge the tragedy of anthropogenic climate change. It is important to tap into the emotional richness of grief about extinction and loss without getting stuck on the "blame game." Our research must allow for the expression of grief and mourning for what has been and is daily being lost. But it is important to adopt a reparative rather than a purely critical stance toward knowing. Might it be possible to welcome the pain of "knowing" if it led to different ways of working with non-human others, recognizing a confluence of desire across the human/non-human divide and the vital rhythms that animate the world? We think that we can work against singular and global representations of "the problem" in the face of which any small, multiple, place-based action is rendered hopeless. We can choose to read for difference rather than dominance; think connectivity rather than hyper-separation; look for multiplicity - multiple climate changes, multiple ways of living with earth others. We can find ways forward in what is already being done in the here and now; attend to the performative effects of any analysis; tell stories in a hopeful and open way - allowing for the possibility that life is dormant rather than dead. We can use our critical capacities to recover our rich traditions of counter-culture and theorize them outside the mainstream/alternative binary. All these ways of thinking and researching give rise to new strategies for going The Philosophy of Teaching ebook pdf forward. TABLE OF CONTENTS Part I. Zhalehrajabi Ehsan: Nucleation, Condensation and Heat Transfer

Nucleation, Condensation and Heat Transfer

Description

This book provides detailed information on numerical modelling of nucleation and condensation based on classical nucleation theory and computational fluid dynamic simulation of the heat transfer coefficient for the nozzle wall. The influences of nozzle geometry, pressure and temperature on the average droplet size are reported. In the second part, the results of the CFD simulation for convective heat transfer of turbulent flow in a cooled convergent-divergent nozzle have been reported. The importance of the heat transfer coefficient was to find the most suitable metals for the nozzle wall as well as its application for producing nano-particles. ANSYS-ICEM and ANSYS-CFX 13.0 packages were used to mesh and simulate fluid flow in the nozzle, respectively. The effects of different turbulence models, mesh grid resolution, and a wide range of stagnation pressures and temperatures on the heat transfer coefficient have been investigated. Three turbulence models of k-, k- and SST (shear stress transport) were applied to calculate the heat transfer coefficient.

A Path and a Practice: Using Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching as a Guide to an Awakened Spiritual Life

Description

The Tao Te Ching--one of the most loved and widely translated books in human history--has appeared in countless English-language versions. But no modern translation has yet captured the essential thrust of Lao Tzu's work as a practical guide to living an awakened life. Now William Martin, whose acclaimed previous reinterpretations of the Tao (for parents, couples, and elders) have introduced or reacquainted this classic text to thousands of readers, strikingly translates the Tao's eighty-one chapters to uniquely address someone on a Tao--or path--with a practice. Martin frames his new translation with two illuminating, groundbreaking sections: "A Path," which introduces the Tao's nonlinear construction and explains how it works its themes; and "A Practice," which provides practical guidance for readers exploring each of the Tao's themes in depth. Martin's genius in this new translation uncovers how directly the Tao speaks to readers on or about to embark on a spiritual journey.

The 4 Seasons of Marriage: Secrets to a Lasting Marriage

Description

Spring, summer, winter, fall. Marriages are perpetually in a state of transition, continually moving from one season to another--perhaps not annually, as in nature, but just as certainly and consistently. Sometimes we find ourselves in winter--discouraged, detached, and dissatisfied; other times, we experience springtime with its openness, hope, and anticipation. On other occasions, we bask in the warmth of summer--comfortable, relaxed, enjoying life. And then comes fall with its uncertainty, negligence, and apprehension. The cycle repeats itself many times throughout the life of a marriage, just as the seasons repeat themselves in nature. The seasons of marriage come and go. Each one holds the potential for emotional health and happiness, and each one has its challenges. The purpose of this book is to describe these recurring seasons of marriage, help you and your spouse identify which season your marriage is in, and show you how to enhance your marriage in all four seasons.

Hour Game

Description

David Baldacci's heart-stopping Hour Game is the second fast-paced thriller in the King and Maxwell series. Following their collaboration in Split Second, ex-Secret Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have gone into partnership and are investigating the robbery of some secret documents at the residence of the incredibly wealthy Battle family. It seems like a straightforward case of domestic burglary, but soon they begin to suspect links to larger, more terrifying events now shaking the prosperous town of Writghtsburg ...The unidentified corpse of an attractive young woman turns up in the woods; two high school kids, one shot in the back, the other in the face, are found dead in their car; a successful lawyer is discovered stabbed to death in her own home. A serial killer is on the loose. The murderer kills in the manner of famous killers of the past but takes care to leave a stopped watch at the scene of each crime - corresponding to the victim's position on his hit list. As the killing spree escalates it seems that the fractured Battle family are somehow involved and Maxwell and King suddenly find themselves racing to solve an intricate puzzle, one that is full of tantalizing clues but barren of solid evidence, and one that is leaving even the FBI confounded. And all the while, the body count is rising ...Hour Game is followed by Simple Genius, First Family, The Sixth Man and King and Maxwell.

The Panoramic Seer: Bringing the Prophetic Into the Healing Anointing

Description

The Applause of Heaven! Developing your spiritual eye and walking hand in hand with the supernaturally prophetic. "Somehow, I was instantly in Heaven; I knew the room I was standing in was directly adjacent to the throne room of the Father," writes author James Maloney. From this exciting experience, shared in the first chapter, to the thrilling conclusion, The Panoramic Seer reveals realms and realities that most Christians don't even know exist! Panorama is the seer's prophetic gifting that releases the miraculous. It is tied into five key elements: inheritance, humility, compassion, righteousness, and faith. These keys and much more are presented to you in a spiritually sensitive way-straight from the throne room of God. You will hear the applause of Heaven when you operate as a panoramic seer. The only way to cultivate that kind of relationship with Him is in the "secret place." The Panoramic Seer takes you to that special place and offers you the powerful Kingdom secrets that have sustained the move of God from generation to generation.

Guided by empirical research, psychological theory and illustrative case studies involving adults with ASD who have been implicated in crimes, Robyn L. Young and Neil Brewer explain why. They examine the pivotal cognitive, social and behavioural characteristics unique to ASD (such as weak Theory of Mind, restricted interests and acute sensory sensitivities) that - individually or in interaction - may contribute to individuals becoming involved in illegal activities. They then discuss how these same characteristics can result in ongoing ineffective interaction with the criminal justice system.

Sir Walter Scott Sir,Associate Professor of English Ian Duncan: Rob Roy

Rob Roy

Description

For the most popular of his Scottish romances, published at the end of 1817, Scott drew on the legends and historical anecdotes about Rob Roy MacGregor he had collected in his youth. The famous outlaw is only one of a series of vivid characters who cast their spell of the novel's hero, Frank Osbaldistone, on his journey through the wild northern territories of the new United Kingdom. Banished from his father's house, falling hopelessly in love with the spirited Diana Vernon, Frank becomes involved in he conspiracy surrounding the disastrous Jacobite rising of 1715. His adventures take him to 'MacGregor's country', across the Highland Line, where he finds cruelty, heartbreak, and some unlikely friends. By turns thrilling and comic, Rob Roy contains Scott's most sophisticated treatment of the Scottish Highlands as an imaginary space where the modern and the primitive come together. Newly edited from the 'Magnum Opus' text of 1830, this edition includes full explanatory notes and a critical introduction exploring the originality and complexity of Scott's achievement. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Gabriel Martin Roig,Michael Brunelle,Beatriz Cortabarria: Perspective Drawing

Perspective Drawing

Description

Each book in Barron's " Drawing Academy " series takes beginning students through a detailed training course in one specific aspect of drawing. Every title presents a set of "Learning by Doing" lessons, progressively arranged from easy to more difficult. Each lesson advises students on how to analyze their own work and correct mistakes. A "Sketchbook" section following each lesson encourages them to stretch their imaginations, experiment with what they have learned, and develop their skills by trial and error. " Perspective Drawing's " 20 lessons teach students the fundamentals of perspective, the technique that gives flat-surface illustrations of both indoor and outdoor scenes the illusion of depth and distance. Separate lessons focus on room interiors, building exteriors, town squares, roads and rivers, and wide-perspective landscapes that have distant horizons. Instructive photos and illustrations in color and black and white are presented on every page.

Barbara Kingsolver: The Poisonwood Bible

The Poisonwood Bible

Description

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it from garden seeds to Scripture is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa."

Why do we remember events from our childhood as if they happened yesterday, but not what we did last week? Why does our memory seem to work well sometimes and not others? What happens when it goes wrong? Can memory be improved or manipulated, by psychological techniques or even 'brain implants'? How does memory grow and change as we age? And what of so-called 'recovered' memories? This book brings together the latest research in neuroscience and psychology, and weaves in case-studies, anecdotes, and even literature and The Poisonwood Bible free pdf philosophy, to address these and many other important questions about the science of memory - how it works, and why we can't live without it. David Thorne: The Internet is a Playground

The Internet is a Playground

Description

`There is usually a fine line between genius and insanity, but in this case it has become very blurred. Some of the funniest and most clever writing I have read in years.` (Terrance Fielding, `WIRED` magazine)
`I laughed so hard and uncontrollably I could hardly breathe. Reading this on public transport is not a good idea.` (Penthouse magazine)
`Brilliantly funny.` (Jezebel.com)
From the notorious Internet troublemaker who brought the world the explosively popular `Next Time I'll Spend the Money on Drugs Instead,` in which he attempted to pay his chiropractor with a picture he drew of a spider; `Please Design a Logo for Me. With Pie Charts. For Free,` which has been described as one of the most passed-on viral e-mails of all time; and, most recently, the staggeringly popular `Missing Missy,` which has appeared everywhere from `The Guardian` to `Jezebel` to Andrew Sullivan's `The Daily Dish,` comes this profoundly funny collection of irreverent Internet mischief and comedy.
Featuring all of Thorne's viral success, including `Missing Missy,` `The Internet Is a Playground` culls together every article and e- mail from Thorne's wildly popular website 27bslash6.com, as well as enough new material, available only in these pages, to keep you laughing-and, indeed, crying-until Thorne's next stroke-of-genius prank. Or hilarious hoax. Or well-publicized almost-stint in jail (really).

This book is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable achievements in Roman Law and Comparative Law scholarship this century - a fact attested to by the universal The Internet is a Playground download book acclaim with which it has been received throughout Europe, America, and beyond. As a work of Roman Law scholarship it fuses the vast volume of 20th century scholarship on the Roman law of obligations into a clear and very readable (and in many ways original) account of the law. As a work of comparative law it traces the transformation of the Roman law of obligations over the centuries into what is now modern German, English and South African law, presenting the reader with a contrast between these legal systems which is unique both in its scope and its depth. As a whole the book is written with a deep understanding of human nature and of many social, economic, and other forces that determine the face of the law.

Pearl Lowe: All That Glitters

All That Glitters

Description

Pearl Lowe has been a singer in a hugely successful pop group, a fashion model and a friend to some of the most famous people in the country. In the nineties when Britpop was in full swing and London was officially the coolest place on the planet, Pearl really did have it all. She was a beautiful woman with a glamorous career and a rock and roll husband she adored, as well as a growing family of gorgeous kids. Except, actually, the parties and the homelife were in terrible tension because Pearl was drinking and taking drugs to such excess that she wasn't sure she would survive. Pearl was a junkie before she discovered party drugs like ecstasy and cocaine. She managed to look after her kids in between enormous binges, but she knew she had a choice to make: confront the demons, get clean and have her life back, or give up and slip away further into addiction, illness, death. Pearl made her choice. These days she lives with her husband and children in the countryside and she has left the London lifestyle behind. But she isn't the kind of person who could ever give up on glamour - it's just that these days she designs her own line of beautiful lace dresses rather than killing herself slowly with booze and drugs. She is happy. Pearl's story is a fascinating insight into a world that appears scintillating but is relentless in its destructiveness. It's also inspiring in its message that recovery is possible and sustainable, for everyone.
